A doctor, believed to be a gastroenterologist, is lucky to be alive after an attempt was made on his life as he approached his workplace at Life Westville Hospital this morning.
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a gunman opened fire on the doctor. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
KZN police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said a case of attempted murder was being investigated.
"This follows an incident in which a 65-year-old man was attacked by unknown men, while on his way to work. He was able to escape but suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The motive for the attack is unknown," said Constable Ngcobo.
According to reports, the doctor was driving an SUV and was about to enter the hospital's property when gunshots were fired directly into the driver's side of the vehicle.
