IN A MOMENT that took many by surprise and warmed hearts across KwaZulu-Natal, East Coast Radio (ECR) made history by playing a Tamil song during its regular drive broadcast.
The cultural change-up was done by presenters J Sbu and Stacey Norman during their popular afternoon drive-time radio show yesterday.
They played Yeh Macha, a popular Tamil song, during Heritage Month and the start of the fasting month of Purtassi.
“In case you are wondering what station you are listening to, yes, it is ECR. Surprise, surprise. It is Stacey and J Sbu playing you some Sharmaine Maduray on KZN's number one hit music station.
"It is Heritage Month, ladies and gentlemen, on the 24th of September. We're celebrating our various different cultures that exist in our beautiful country and diversity is one of humanity's greatest strengths,” said J Sbu.
Social media reactions poured in moments after the song aired. Many listeners expressed joy and pride, applauding ECR for showcasing South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry.
Meshantan Naidoo took to TikTok to express his delight.
“Shout out to KZN’s number one hit music station ECR, in particular Stacey and J Sbu. They played a South Indian song, a Tamil song, an absolute anthem and J Sbu even took the time to wish everyone a blessed Purtassi Vratham. Imagine that,” said Naidoo.
Annaline Chettiar: “I could not get out of my car. I listened till the end.”
Terissa Ishwarlall: “I had to ask my husband what station he has cause it’s not ECR.”
Akash Jugdeep: “Lol they made history in Durban. I was ‘shocktificated’ when I heard this.”
Loshni Naidoo: “It was a pleasant surprise. With the high number of Indian ECR listeners it was about time we were acknowledged.”
Kevin Munien: “Well done guys. First a tamil song on ECR. Amazing guys.”
