Double tragedy on M1: Chatsworth couple killed in late-night accident

A 28-YEAR-OLD Chatsworth couple, Sashan and Nikyla Naidoo, lost their lives in a devastating single-vehicle accident on the M1 eastbound near the Westcliff off-ramp, in Chatsworth, on Saturday night.

The vehicle rolled multiple times over railway lines, ejecting both occupants.

Emergency responders found the victims metres apart, with Sashan declared dead at the scene while Nikyla succumbed to her injuries at hospital despite resuscitation efforts.

Amawele Emergency Services spokesperson Claude Subramodey said their teams were the first to arrive on .

“A single vehicle lost control and rolled multiple times over the railway line,  ejecting both the driver and passenger metres apart,” Subramodey said.

According to emergency responders, Sashan was located first on the railway line.

He was assessed by Amawele medics and showed no signs of life.

A search lasting approximately 15 minutes was then conducted in the surrounding area.

Nikyla’s body was found on the opposite side of the highway, several metres away from the wrecked vehicle.

“The female was in a critical condition and with the help we started resuscitating her. After 20 minutes we were ready to move the patient to a private hospital. Sadly, at the hospital trauma unit, the female went into cardiac arrest and there was nothing more they could do for her. She was also declared deceased,” said Subramodey.
