TWO suspected drug dealers were arrested in separate operations in Newcastle on Monday, following coordinated efforts by KwaZulu-Natal police and private security personnel.
The suspects, aged between 34 and 37, were arrested after police acted on intelligence regarding drug trafficking activities in the area. The total street value of the drugs seized is estimated to be more than R190 000.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said members of the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit received information about a suspect who had allegedly travelled to Gauteng to collect drugs and was returning to Newcastle.
“Members from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit had received information of an individual who had collected drugs from Gauteng and was travelling back to Newcastle. The suspected individual was monitored until the team pounced on him at the Newcastle Central Business District,” said Magwaza.
Police found the suspect in possession of drugs, and a subsequent search at his residence led to the recovery of crystal meth.
The 37-year-old suspect, who is currently out on bail for a drug-related offence, was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.
In a second incident on the same day, police were alerted to another suspected drug dealer who was allegedly preparing to leave his home with a large quantity of drugs.
“Police officers managed to corner the suspect just before he could leave his home. Police searched his vehicle and recovered crystal meth as well as an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect was also arrested and charged for dealing in drugs.”
Both suspects will appear in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (February 3), where they face charges of dealing in drugs.
