THE Umkomaas Police Station was recently named Station of the Year at the SAPS National Excellence Awards 2026, showcasing that not all heroes wear capes but a blue SAPS uniform.
“We serve with integrity and celebrate excellence," said the acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel MD Zungu.
"Our leadership trajectory is continuous, servicing with optimal contribution. My thanks and appreciation go to retired Colonel Mngadi, our management team and all my principals within the chain of command."
“To my dignified blue, I say ngiyabonga. Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear the blue SAPS uniform. You made Umkomaas proud. We are on the map, and we will continue to strive for improvement, innovation and the upholding of justice, equality and respect for all."
The station's spokesperson, Captain Ranjith Rampersad, added: “This prestigious award serves as a powerful reminder that behind every accolade is a story of sacrifice and resilience. The ward reflects the character and commitment of the members behind the badge."
The announcement was made at an awards ceremony in Bloemfontein, marking a historic first for Umkomaas SAPS.
According to the SAPS Facebook page, the accolade followed years of consistent improvement under the leadership of retired Colonel MI Mngadi, whose command saw a dramatic turnaround in service delivery and operational performance.
"During his tenure, complaints against police in the Umkomaas area were reduced by 50%, while absenteeism and prolonged sick leave among members dropped by an impressive 80%. Through strict monitoring of performance and daily administration, the station achieved all its targets."
The SAPS said community-centred policing formed a cornerstone of the station’s success.
"Shift commanders and members remained accessible to the public day and night via landlines, cellphones, WhatsApp and email, with contact details widely shared through local media and community engagements. Strong partnerships were forged with the Community Policing Forum, youth desk, sector forums, traditional leaders, schools, clinics, businesses, and both government and non-governmental organisations."
