Director: Ashish R Mohan
Rating: 7/10
THIS is one of those movies where the trailer belies the expectation of lots of comedy as grandmother Vimla Ahuja (Neetu Kapoor), who lives on her own, has to fob off the attempts by her two sons and daughter, who all have their own families, to stop her plan to remarry.
The comedy is certainly there at times, but the plot is essentially one of a family social drama exploring the challenges of leaving seniors to their own lonely lives with children almost never visiting them sometimes.
Director Ashish R Mohan sets the audience thinking about this issue as he uses the excuse of Tony Kalra (Kapil Sharma) wooing Vimla's granddaughter, played by Sadia Khateeb.
The two sons learn about their own family challenges in their plans to stop their mother, while the daughter, played by Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Neetu’s real-life daughter making her screen debut, hides her own issues from her mother.
With a rather slow first half, the plot, which could have been helped along by some background music at times, drags on for a while, but begins to settle in the second. The whole movie could have been much shorter and still have had the similar impact as the classic Bhagbaan, with a similar theme, of some years ago.
R Sarathkumar as Colonel Theeran Devarajan, the retired army man who is Vimal’s supposed beau, puts in a good performance before the children start finding out some other things about him.
Sharma, breaking away from his TV and screen comic image to some extent, shows a different side to his talent when he becomes the unlikely mediator as an outsider to resolve the issues between the siblings and their mother. His preaching monologue in the climax about looking after parents comes across though as clichéd, like a script learnt parrot fashion.
Neetu remains the experiences scene-stealer in the movie. There is indeed a happy family wedding ending, but is it Daadi ki Shaadi? Watch the movie to find out.
