Kenneth Brown has been appointed as the interim Chairperson of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), as part of efforts to stabilise and reform the entity following the dissolution of its board earlier this year.
IOL previously reported that the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, dissolved the board, citing ongoing governance failures, operational dysfunction, and escalating legal costs that had severely impacted the fund’s ability to meet its legislative mandate.
One notable incident that sparked concern was the "reckless handling" of the suspension of the Fund's CEO, Collins Letsoalo. His subsequent legal challenge to this suspension further complicated the RAF's operations and led to heightened scrutiny of the board's decision-making processes.
"The protracted and costly litigation pursued by the RAF on the application of accounting standards, which has resulted in further strain on the entity’s financial resources and capacity," the minister said.
Brown previously served at the National Treasury, where he held several senior roles over a 19-year period. In 2013, he was also appointed as the Chief Procurement Officer (CPO). He also served as Head of Intergovernmental Relations for six years.
He also holds a Master of Science (Public Policy) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Bachelor of Arts Honours (Economics), from the University of the Western Cape, and a Bachelor of Arts, from the University of the Western Cape.
Following his departure from Treasury in 2016, Brown held executive roles in both the private and development finance sectors.
Furthermore, the Cabinet also announced the appointment of Sedzani Faith Mudau as Chairperson of the South African Airways (SAA) Board.
