Checkers has ushered in a new era of grocery shopping in South Africa with the launch of its innovative Xpress Trolley. This smart shopping cart is designed to enhance the shopping experience, offering convenience and speed to customers.

Here’s everything you need to know about this groundbreaking addition to grocery shopping.

  • Introduction of Smart Shopping Trolley

Checkers has introduced South Africa's first 'smart' shopping trolley, the Xpress Trolley, aimed at transforming the grocery shopping experience. This initiative aims to make shopping faster and more convenient for all customers.

  • Features of the Xpress Trolley

The Xpress Trolley allows shoppers to scan and bag items as they go, keeping a live running total of their purchases. This eliminates the need for traditional checkouts, allowing for a seamless payment process directly on the trolley.

  • User-Friendly Technology

The shopping trolley is equipped with a user-friendly screen that offers real-time product details, personalised promotions, and a running total, helping customers to monitor their spending as they shop.

  • In-Store Navigation Assistance

Alongside its scanning capabilities, the screen also aids in-store navigation by indicating the location of products within the store, making it easier for shoppers to find what they need without wandering around the supermarket.

  • Initial Rollout and Testing

Following successful tests conducted with employees at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell, a total of 20 Xpress Trolleys will be available for customers—10 at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and another 10 at Checkers Constantia.

  • Comments from Checkers Management

Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group, expressed that this pilot project reimagines the shopping experience using technology, promising a frictionless journey from entry to exit

  • How to Use the Xpress Trolley

Customers can easily operate the trolley by following these steps:

  1. Scan their Xtra Savings card to begin shopping.
  2. Place provided shopping bags into the trolley.
  3. Scan the barcode of each item before placing it in the trolley.
  4. Track the live basket total, view product information, and activate personalised promotions.
  5. Head to a dedicated checkout lane and pay directly from the trolley using a bank card linked to their Checkers Sixty60 profile.
  6. Take the printed till slip and exit the store via the checkout gate with concierge support available.
