It's been a bad week for Aussies in Cape Town.

There was the night on the town by the Brumbies rugby team members who sowed mayhem in restaurants and trashed a taxi.

And now former Australian cricket captain Bobby Simpson has fallen prey to thieves.

His bag, which contained important cricket contact numbers collected over more than 30 years, was stolen from the Bellville Cricket Club pavilion on Friday. The thieves later ransacked Simpson's hotel room using the keys they found in the bag.

Simpson, who is soon to take up the position of head coach at Lancashire County Cricket Club, was watching a match between the team and Western Province B when the theft took place.

The bag contained his contact book, the team's batting and bowling statistics and the keys to his room at the Protea Hiddingh Mews in the Gardens.

Cricket equipment and clothing were also taken from the room. Tour manager Dave Edmundson appealed to the thieves to return the bag.

"The contact book is absolutely priceless and of no benefit to anyone else. Bobby also needs the statistics for his job as head coach."
