AUDI has decided that a TT can not only have drop-dead good looks but be practical too, and has launched a Sportback version with five doors and generous rear legroom.

The TT Sportback concept launched in Paris is 29cm longer than the regular three-door TT to measure 4.47 metres in length, ensuring its two rear seats will swallow a pair of adults much more comfortably.

The Sportback’s also 3cm lower to give it a dynamic stance.

The TT Sportback is designed to follow in the footsteps of the A5 Sportback and A7 Sportback, though with a new TT-flavoured look and feel. The car could be a possible rival to a Mercedes-Benz CLA or BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé.

Power comes from a more potent version of VW/Audi’s 2-litre TFSI turbopetrol engine with outputs of 294kW and 450Nm. A seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic gearbox delivers it to the road via quattro drive, and claimed performance is a very lively 3.9 second 0-100km/h sprint.

As with the standard Audi TT, the TT Sportback offers the same “virtual dashboard” digital display in place of a conventional instrument panel, as well as offering MMI multimedia and infotainment functions.
