Following a recent council meeting, advocate Ranjiv Nirghin has stepped into the role of president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS).
According to a statement issued by Professor Brij Maharaj, the deputy president of the sabha, Nirghin was unanimously elected in terms of its constitution at its council meeting on Saturday.
Nirghin served in various capacities as the youth coordinator, and council and executive member of the SAHMS.
"He also brings a wealth of experience as the president of the Midlands Hindu Society (MHS) in Pietermaritzburg.
"He indicated that while it is impossible to fill the late Mr Ashwin Trikamjee’s shoes, he is committed to upholding Hindu Dharma, the vision and mission of the SAHMS, specifically promoting unity in diversity, irrespective of our linguistic and sectarian beliefs, within in a multi-religious and multi-cultural society in South Africa, in keeping with the motto of the Maha Sabha – Vasudhaiv Kutumbakum – the world is one family," said Maharaj.
The Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum said Nirghin’s leadership at the MHS had been nothing short of phenomenal, and had been marked by dedication, intellectual brilliance, and commitment to Hindu unity.
"Under his guidance, the MHS has flourished as a beacon of dharma, education, and community empowerment. Now, with his elevation to the helm of the SAHMS, the entire South African Hindu community stands blessed," said th forum in a statement.
