THE much-anticipated 7th annual Durban Ganesh Utsav will be held from tomorrow (Tuesday) at Greyville Racecourse from 6pm.

This festival, dedicated to Lord Ganesha - the remover of obstacles - will offer a unique blend of spirituality and festivity.

Organised by Viran Singh and Aman Dang, the festival has blossomed into a cherished tradition, drawing thousands of devotees and culture enthusiasts.

“The Durban Ganesh Utsav is more than a festival, it’s a sanctuary of spiritual connection and communal harmony,” said Thakur Singh, a chief organiser of the event.

“We are honoured to host this sacred celebration once again, offering free entry to all who wish to partake in the divine energy and joyous atmosphere.”

He said an idol of Lord Ganesha would be unveiled tomorrow.

Each evening will showcase satsangs, where attendees gather for prayer and reflection. The events, from Wednesday to September 5, will be held from 6.30pm.

Complimentary supper will also be served to all.

The highlight of the festival will be the grand visarjan (immersion) ceremony on Saturday, September 6.

Ten handcrafted murthies (idols) of Lord Ganesha have been imported from India, alongside the main Ganesha statue and Mushak. These biodegradable idols, each varying in size and artistry, will be ceremoniously placed on a boat at the Durban Harbour and immersed in the ocean, symbolising the eternal cycle of creation and dissolution.

Members of the community and festival-goers will have the opportunity to witness this ceremony from the Blue Lagoon lookout point, available for viewing between 1pm and 3pm.
