ELEVEN-year-old Seyuri Gounden from Woodhurst, Chatsworth, has been selected for the U13 KZN Dolphins Primary Schools cricket team, marking a significant milestone in her young career.

Her journey from backyard cricket games to provincial recognition showcases her determination and passion for the sport. Seyuri will represent the province at the Gauteng Geo-Political Cricket Regional Week later this year.

The talented cricketer was introduced to cricket from a young age when she watched matches on television with her father, Dev Gounden. As she grew older, so did her love for the game, with her dreaming of becoming part of the Dolphins and Protea teams.

“I dream of representing my country someday,” said a patriotic Seyuri. Her first memory of playing the game was when she was 5, and batting in the backyard with her father and brother.

At the age of 9, Seyuri began playing cricket at school. In Grade 4, she participated in the school’s KFC Mini Cricket programme.

“That was when I realised I wanted to play more and become a professional,” she added.

As an all-rounder, Seyuri usually plays middle order batsman or off-spin bowler.

“I also love fielding. It becomes tense because you have to be on the go all the time. Saving the fours, taking catches and getting run-outs also give me a thrill.

“But the number one for me, is the sliding,” she laughed.

“As a batsman I get excited. I enjoy the force with which I hit the balls and, of course, making the runs,” said the now Grade 6 pupil at Falcon Primary in Woodhurst.

Seyuri’s cricketing journey took a significant leap when she was recognised by the Chatsworth United Women’s Cricket Club in mid-2023.She said being part of this club exposed her to some of the finest players in the province, and allowed her to learn from them and enhance her skills.

Her coach, Elvis Govender, the head coach of the Chatsworth Cricket Hub, said: “Seyuri came to us not knowing much about cricket. She loves the game and her passion is second to none.

“She is a quick learner and has good listening skills. She took to cricket like a duck to water,” said Govender.

“She has improved her game immensely. To get her provincial colours in cricket in such a short space of time, augurs well for her dedication, interest, passion and love for the game.

“She never misses a practice session or a game,” he added.

We are confident that she will represent our school and the KZN Primary Schools Cricket Association with pride and distinction. We wish her all the best for the Gauteng Geo-Political Regional Week and her future cricketing endeavours.”

Seyuri said she looked forward to the tour and training.

“I believe that people should play whatever sport they want, and that everybody should be treated equally. I enjoy the sport and am committed to it.

"My biggest dream is to make it my career,” she said.

Seyuri’s words of encouragement: “Follow your dreams. If you want to play the sport, go for it. No one should stop you.”
