What is a grunter fish?

The grunter fish, specifically the Spotted Grunter, is a popular game fish that gets its name from the grunting sound it makes by grinding its jaws. This sound-producing ability is quite remarkable.

Characteristics and habitat

Grunter fish have some notable characteristics. Spotted grunters have a distinctive appearance, while grey grunters are silvery-grey with horizontal brown stripes and a steep head profile. When it comes to habitat, spotted grunters inhabit shallow estuaries and coastal areas, whereas grey grunters are found in inshore reefs and sandy areas.

Distribution

Grunter fish are found in various parts of the world. Spotted grunters are distributed across the Indo-West Pacific region, including the eastern coast of Africa and South Africa. Grey grunters, on the other hand, are common in southern Mozambique and northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Behaviour and diet

Grunters are known to feed on small creatures like prawns, worms, and crustaceans. They have a unique way of uncovering their prey by squirting a jet of water from their mouths. Spotted grunters are often seen in shallow estuaries with their tails waving above the water as they feed. Grey grunters, however, are highly resident species with a small home range.

Conservation Status

Unfortunately, the spotted grunter is listed as vulnerable in the South African National Biodiversity Assessment due to overfishing and habitat degradation. This highlights the need for conservation efforts to protect this species.
