A NEWLY established Durban-based non-profit, Bayt Al Mansiy, is launching a shoe collection drive for the estimated 50,000 children orphaned in Gaza.

Founded by Phoenix resident Fadeela Roman, the initiative aims to address the critical shortage of footwear that has forced many children to walk barefoot, increasing their risk of disease.

The official launch takes place on Sunday at the Masjid Al Aqsa in Phoenix.

Roman said: “As a nation that once suffered under apartheid, we have seen first-hand the long-term effects of oppression including poverty, unemployment and inequality.

We are now witnessing first-hand the impact of the genocide on the people of Palestine. Our mission is to serve the forgotten Gaza - the 50 000 innocent children who have been orphaned due to the genocide. I believe that together we can make a difference in bringing hope and being a pillar of strength to the Palestine people.”

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), ‘years of blockade and economic hardships in Gaza mean that many children are forced to walk to school barefoot or in sandals and other flimsy shoes.”

The report describes shoes as a “scarcity” with “many households having to choose between essential items and the luxury of shoes.”

OCHA shared its concern that children not having shoes “increased the risk of diseases”.

Roman said the purpose of their foundation was to empower local and international communities, enrich lives, and encourage self-sustainability.

“Our mission is to provide much needed humanitarian aid, support and resources to those in need, fostering dignity, hope and resilience. We strive to bridge gaps, break barriers and build stronger, more compassionate communities, regardless of borders or boundaries,” she added.

The shoe drive collection will take place at the launch of Baty Al Mansiy on Sunday from 10am to 2pm, at the Masjid Al Aqsa in Brookdale, Phoenix. Any children’s shoe can be dropped off in the donation box.

The day’s program will include a live performance by a traditional Cape Malay Thikr Jamaah, guest speakers and the auctioning of South African handmade crafts. Lunch will be served. For more information or to rsvp, contact Fadeela on 083 280 5796.
