THE oThongathi Museum Committee hosted an event at Buffelsdale Primary School in Tongaat on Sunday to mark the 165th anniversary of Indian indentured workers' arrival in South Africa.
This gathering aimed to inspire the younger generation by raising awareness about their roots and the evolution of education in the Tongaat region. The event was designed with the belief that children are the custodians of the future, and thus, it was imperative that the older generations shared their knowledge and experiences.
The ceremony featured a diverse lineup of speakers who reflected on the lasting impact of Indian heritage in South Africa.

Among those who addressed the audience, Samiksha Sheokarah, the Deputy Chair of the School Governing Body, spoke on the importance of preserving one’s heritage; while pupils Kumeshan Govender spoke about his forefathers from India; Aayik Mayson Sheokarah on indentured Indian history; Kausar Khan recited a prayer in Urdu; Yadiel Venkatachalam spoke about the contributions by his grandfather, V Moonsamy.
There were prayers and songs in the vernacular, while Swami Lokasangrahananda, of the Sivananda Vedanta Ashram in Seatides, delivered a talk on spiritual awareness.
