The George Ramalu Azelis Boys and Girls Youth League ended the sporting year on a high note with a presentation banquet hosted by the Phoenix Local Football Association (LFA) last Sunday.
About 300 players, coaches, and officials celebrated the outstanding achievements of the young athletes who participated in the league throughout the year. The afternoon was filled with excitement as players were presented with league champion medals, and the clubs received outright trophies. Each division's Player of the Year also received a trophy, presented by the trustees of the trust and Phoenix LFA executives.
Foresthaven Sporting Club took top honours in the 6 and 7-year-old divisions, while Longcroft Falcons dominated the under-8 and 9, 13 and 15-year-old divisions. Other winners included Sunford Sporting (under 10), Woodview Sporting (under 11), TND FC (under 17), and Ipisi Pandemic (Under 19).
In the female league, Sunford Sporting was crowned Under-15 champions, while Ipisi Pandemic FC claimed the Under-19 title.
Boston Moonsamy, Managing Director of Azelis South Africa and trustee of the George Ramalu Memorial Trust, praised the event and the association's work.
“I am so humbled to have witnessed first-hand the work Phoenix LFA and its dedicated executive are doing to keep our youth engaged through football,” said Moonsamy.
“I regularly visit the Woodview Sportfield on a Saturday to watch my son play, and it’s amazing to see the impact this league has on our young people.
"The George Ramalu Memorial Trust is committed to supporting youth development and promoting football in our community. "We are proud to partner with Phoenix LFA to provide opportunities for our youth to engage in sports and develop their skills.”
Lloyd Govender, Secretary for Foresthaven Sporting Club (FSC), shared his pride, particularly for the six and seven-year-old divisions who won their respective league titles.
“Many of the players were playing football for the first time,” Govender said.
“Their victories are priceless and what’s more fulfilling for us at Foresthaven is that we are offering these children an opportunity to express themselves through an outdoor sport, keeping them active, meeting new friends and allowing them to be a part of our ever-growing community-based organisation.”
