THE passing of Sydney Reddy, aged 82, marks the end of an era for an old-school photographer whose work touched countless lives.

Photography ran in his family - his brother-in-law Bala Govender and uncle Morris Reddy were both well-known in the field, and Sydney naturally followed in their footsteps. He began humbly, going door-to-door to capture family portraits, gradually building a loyal clientele that became the foundation of his business, Studio Sydney.

Although he never worked as a news photographer, Sydney maintained close ties with newspapers such as The Graphic, The Leader, and the POST for decades, supplying them with vibrant social photographs. His images of celebrities and glamorous swimsuit models often graced their front pages, cementing his reputation for flair and style.

Sydney’s true legacy, however, lies in wedding photography. He became a household name by offering an innovative package deal: numerous postcard-sized prints, a framed enlargement, a complimentary photo album, and even the use of his luxury sedan as a bridal car. His artistry made him a favourite among couples, and his work reached royal heights when he was chosen as the official photographer for King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu and Queen Thandekile Ndlovu’s wedding in 1988.

Beyond weddings, Sydney and his wife Val brought joy to children and families for years through their annual Father Christmas photo sessions at the Pavilion shopping mall, a tradition fondly remembered by many.

Sydney Reddy will be remembered not only for his skill behind the lens but also for the warmth, creativity, and dedication that defined his career. His photographs captured more than moments; they captured the spirit of a generation.

His funeral take place tomorrow at the Living Waters Church in Durban North from 11am to 1pm. The cremation will be private.
