Jerry Naicker, the general secretary of the Shree Ramachundra Prabhu Temple on Hillhead Estate, on Durban's north coast, and Mervin Govender, a temple trustee, performed prayers Tuesday morning to welcome the Tamil New Year.

Govender described the temple, often referred to as "Hillhead Temple," as "a sacred jewel of our heritage".

"This holy space is more than just a structure. It is a living testament to the faith, sacrifice, and devotion of our forebears. Over a century ago, they built this temple with their bare hands, carrying with them their prayers, traditions, and unwavering belief in dharma. As we gathered to offer our prayers, we stood not alone, but in the presence of generations who came before us.

"Every offering, every chant, and every flame lit was a continuation of a sacred legacy that has never been broken. The temple remains a beacon of spiritual strength, reminding us of our identity and origins. In preserving and honouring it, we honour our ancestors and safeguard this legacy for generations to come."
