As the full moon of Vesak rises this May, millions of Buddhists across the world will pause to honour one of humanity’s greatest spiritual teachers, the Buddha.

Vesak is not merely a religious observance; it is a deeply reflective moment that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha, all believed to have occurred on this sacred day.

"In an era defined by global tension, social fragmentation, and personal anxiety, Vesak carries a message of profound relevance," said Jerald Vedan, president of the KZN Buddhist Forum.

"The Buddha’s teachings, centred on compassion, mindfulness, and the alleviation of suffering - offer a pathway not only to personal peace but to collective healing. For Buddhists, Vesak is a time to cultivate generosity, practise meditation, and reaffirm a commitment to non-violence and ethical living. It is also an invitation to the broader community to reflect on universal values that transcend religion: kindness, understanding, and the pursuit of inner calm."

He said the theme for this year, “May there be Peace for Ourselves and in the World,” resonated deeply.

"It reminds us that peace is not imposed from outside, but nurtured within. In lighting a single candle of awareness, each person contributes to a brighter, more compassionate world."

The KZN Buddhist Society and the KZN Buddhist Forum will observe Vesak Day on May 3 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Cato Manor Hindu Temple Hall at 588 Vusi Mzimela Road (formerly Bellair Road), Durban.

The programme will include: a blessing ceremony, dhamma talks (teachings), guided meditation, sacred singing and spiritual dancing. A vegetarian meal will be served. For enquiries, call Katerina at 031 409 1397/8 (weekdays, 8am to 4.30pm).
