A man in an orange jumpsuit, with ropes coiled about him, damaged at least three cars in Durban’s city centre this week – using a metal weight attached to one of the ropes.
Head of the eThekwini Community Foundation, Kathryn Kure, fell victim to the assailant on Monday, when her windscreen was smashed with the weight.
“I was on my way into town at about 10.30am. I stopped at the traffic light near the city hall in Dr Pixley KaSeme (West) Street, and the car in front of me suddenly drove off,” she said.
“The man had thrown a metal weight, which was attached to a rope, on to that person’s car, damaging the roof. He had also damaged the car in front of that one. I was third in line.”
Kure said the man then reeled the rope back in and threw the weight at her windscreen.
She then drove down the road and called the police.
“The crowd around me said this man had always been there, and that smashing cars with his weight was his ‘thing’,” she said.
“My car is out of action, and I am not sure when it will be repaired.”
Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, could not confirm the incident last night because the docket had been transferred to another police station.
