Durban - The three men allegedly involved in robbing two Inanda police officers of their guns, stripping them of their uniforms and shooting them, were expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The trio, aged between 18 and 26, were arrested on Wednesday in Mariannhill.
Sergeant Vusimuzi Moyana was killed on Tuesday and left in the back of his police van, and his female partner, Sergeant Jabu Jojisa, was critically injured.
She is still in a critical condition in hospital.
The two police officers, from Inanda police station’s enquiries office, were in the Namibia informal settlement serving a protection order on a man in connection with a domestic violence case.
According to provincial police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane, while the pair were at the suspect’s house, he and two others overpowered the officers and took their firearms.
He said the men then drove the officers to Ngcungcwini, in Inanda, where they were both shot and locked up in the back of the police van.
The three fled and police had used a helicopter and other police units to search for them, finding them early on Wednesday.
The Daily News reported on Thursday that the men were expected to face charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
KwaZulu -Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni visited Moyana’s family in Ntuzuma on Thursday, and told the media that police had recovered three firearms, including the two taken from the police officers.
