As tensions rise, a nationwide shutdown has been called for within the next 14 days, following serious allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial leader of police during a recent media briefing.
According to Business Against Crime, the claims made by KZN Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi have ignited widespread concern regarding the integrity of law enforcement and leadership within the South African Police Service (SAPS), leading to mounting public agitation.
In its situational report, Business Against Crime stated that from July 14 to 16, 2025, various protests erupted across the nation, with KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng witnessing the highest levels of activity.
Currently, the demonstrations have largely remained peaceful, with police maintaining a strong and visible presence to monitor developments effectively, said the organisation in a statement.
The organisation further stated that on Thursday morning protests were planned in several provinces, emphasising the growing uproar over current events.
The planned demonstrations were as follows:
Gauteng: Speech by SAMWU’s leaders at a planned march.
North West: Marches affecting Majakaneng; roads N4, R104, and R5.
Mpumalanga: Protests in Carolina focusing on service delivery issues.
KwaZulu-Natal: "HandsoffMkhwanazi" march occurring in Pietermaritzburg.
Tomorrow, a larger “HandsoffMkhwanazi” protest is set to take place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng, alongside simultaneous events planned in KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.
This escalating movement indicates a potential for widespread dissent, forcing law enforcement agencies to be on high alert.
Business Against Crime stated that authorities were particularly concerned that the unrest may entail mass strike actions, posing a threat to public order and safety, including possible disruptions to transportation systems, residential areas, and businesses.
"Additionally, the risk of opportunistic looting is increased amid such chaos. In response, all gatherings of ten or more individuals are to be reported through the E2 platform for rapid intervention," the organisation stated.
It added that critical infrastructure, including reservoirs, pipelines, and electricity facilities, was being monitored closely.
Shopping centres and key business areas have been urged to implement heightened security measures to safeguard their establishments.
