Durban - There are fears that a dog that managed to escape after being caught in snare might be running around with the snare.
Snare Aware, a team of environmental activists, said that a quiet Sunday afternoon was interrupted by a panicked call from a member of the public, who could hear the wails of a dog in the bush adjoining their property.
They could also see a small tree moving and shaking. Telltale signs of a dog caught in a snare.
Snare Aware said that without hesitating, two of their team members headed out into the area where they were met by another neighbour who had gone in to look around in the bush to find the dog before they got there.
“He managed to find one snare and gave it to our two members. With time not on our side and running out of light, searching with cellphone torches, we managed to remove nine snares in difficult muddy terrain,” Snare Aware said.
“The location of the ensnared dog was also identified by the bite marks on the branches of the tree. It is suspected that the dog broke free from the snare and ran off. The 10th snare unfortunately is likely still attached to the dog who escaped, as there was no sign of it at the location.”
Snare Aware called on Doon Heights residents to keep a lookout for the potentially injured dog.
“We will head back into this area as soon as we can to sweep the rest of the area and remove any snares left behind,” Snare Aware added.
