DURBAN - Mixed reactions have come from people who watched the video of a man who confronts would-be robbers by standing at the top of his driveway with a gun in his hand as the robbers make their way through his gate.

The video went viral on Facebook on Monday.

According to a Facebook post, the video was taken in Hillgrove, Newlands West, north of Durban, on Sunday.

In the video, supplied by the eThekwini Secure group on Facebook, three men approach the gate, force it open and squeeze through a small gap.

After the last man squeezes through, two of the men attempt to close the gap, while the third walks up the driveway.

To his surprise, the homeowner approaches, gun in hand, and the robber backs away. It seems he alerts his accomplices as the three head out the gate.

They try to push the gate open again while one of them makes a hand gesture of an apology.

By then, the homeowner is visible in the video and just stands at the top of the driveway. He then moves towards the gate. The firearm, which appears to be a shotgun, can be seen in the shot.

Commenting on the incident on one of the Facebook posts, this is what people had to say:

Musa Nzuza said: “The owner knows the rules of firearms, that is why he did not shoot. They trespass the territory but still have no weapon on their hands. They are not approaching the owner aggressively. They did not break anything. The owner acted very calm and wisely. For not killing thugs, he avoided being grilled in court.”

Nitasha Ramlakhan said: “Thank God for the guy who came out with his firearm. They were lucky to have walked away and not out in a body bag.”

Malcolm Alvin Pillay said: “Should never let them leave, teach them a lesson first and then call the cops.”

Jayshree Pillay said: “Sad that it has to come to this that you have to have weapons to protect your home.”

Kiran Deonarain said: “Let them come in and then make them disappear. Letting them go aint gonna help because they will keep coming back.”

Salim Alli said: “You should have let them have a taste, now they will come back for the firearm.”

Zafeera Ismail said: “Thanks for sharing. I live a few doors away from this home. Now I know which faces to look for. Looks like they just started operating here because I have not seen them before.”
