OPINION - One of the key characteristics of a world-class city is its ability to attract international and national business headquarters to be located in it. This is no doubt beneficial to its citizens as it increases revenue and creates jobs.
In the world of business, the most important factor when choosing a city to locate to is the ability to enter and leave the office within the shortest period of time. Connectivity and networking are key.
Unfortunately Durban is losing its status as a business hub. There are far too many disruptions and protests. Just last Friday the police got permission to hold an awareness campaign in Pixley Ka Seme (formerly West) Street during peak hour. This resulted in traffic congestion and delays for hours. Imagine business leaders caught up in these delays.
There has to be a commitment from the city leadership to reject protest/awareness applications from anyone, that would disrupt traffic. Protesting and other campaigns must be must be done during quieter periods.
