Born from a passion for thoughtful design, sustainable practices and extraordinary local craftsmanship, Studio KÁJA’s design journey begins with curiosity and a Weltanschauung inspired by architecture, nature and timeless designs. Each piece is uniquely storied from concept to experimentation to functional object, where the material selection is a mindful process and the environmental and social implications of production are just as intentional.
‘From concept to reality, Studio KÁJA has navigated countless iterations and collaborations with local artisans,’ says Simoné Lategan, interior designer and founder of Studio KÁJA. ‘We've refined our processes, honed our aesthetic, and found our core production team in Pierre Cronje Fine Furniture, who have become like family. Today, we're honoured to offer pieces that embody our values: mindfully crafted in Cape Town and made to last.’
Emphasising sustainable and intuitive design is de rigueur for Studio KÁJA. As such, the Cape Town-based studio often partners with skilled artisans to preserve time-honoured techniques that focus on quality and telling meaningful stories through every maker's signature. ‘We prioritise sustainable and natural materials to craft designs that last a lifetime,’ adds Lategan. ‘We strive to support local communities and to change the narrative that conscious creativity does not need to mean compromising on aesthetics.
Working closely with Pierre Cronje's skilled team in Cape Town, Studio KÁJA explores sketches, materials, forms and joints, seeking harmony between beauty, function, and sustainability. Each piece passes through the hands of talented, local artisans who have mastered their craft for decades to ensure every detail reflects the artistry and dedication embedded in the work.
‘We're also passionate about partnering with local artisans on smaller batch collaborations. This includes pieces such as our limited-edition Hum Stools, with Cape Town based sculpture artist Right Mukore, and our Sōla Lamp, crafted with clay potter Martin Bartholomae.
We prioritise local suppliers, honouring traditional techniques and attention to detail,’ says Lategan. Studio KÁJA is a tour de force in exploring innovative and sustainable materials, stripping away what is unnecessary and focusing instead on clean lines and intuitive design.
By selecting materials that balance character, durability and sustainability, their multifunctional pieces, such as the Baa and Nook Stools collection, become versatile companions that bring warmth and character to your spaces. ‘Our pieces are crafted to evolve with you — to adapt to life's changing seasons and needs. We're also excited to share purposeful decor in progress, including handcrafted tote bags, woven throws and unique, smaller pieces,’ Lategan concludes.
