In what was probably one of the most heartwarming moments of 2024, Tatjana Smith was tipped R100 for an incredible performance at the Paris Olympics by fan Jackie van Staade.

Smith had just returned from the Olympics and was treated to a hero’s welcome by the crowd assembled at OR Tambo on August 14, 2024.

Amid the excitement, IOL Sport’s Michael Sherman managed to capture the special moment between Smith and Van Staade.

The video across the various social media platforms garnered over 1 million views, and it has inspired Van Staade to pay it forward.

R100 Sport Fan Gift Fund: Empowering Underprivileged Kids Through Sports

Since then, Van Staade has started the R100 Sport Fan Gift Fund which aims to help children get into sports, who otherwise might not have access.

“This fund helps to give underprivileged kids an opportunity to play sport,” Van Staade exclusively told IOL.

“My dream is for this fund to become a national fund where all South African Sport fans can contribute.”

Van Staade’s Call to Action: Donate R100 for Sports Development in South Africa

In a Facebook post on August 13,  Van Staade called on the public to help donate to the fund.

In the video, Van Staade said: “South African sports fans, we have a unique spirit. We don’t just clap and cheer, we live Ubuntu. When we come together, it’s like magic!

“Today, I challenge you - donate R100 to sports development in South African communities. On Heritage Day [September 24], I will be having my R100 wors ‘rolletjie’ braai. Donate your R100 and let’s get the kids off the streets.”
