The family of the late actor Presley Chweneyagae informed the media that he died due to natural causes, with no suspicion of foul play.
Family spokesperson Mzwakhe Sigudla clarified to the media that the actor's death was natural, stating, "We want to put the record straight that it was a natural death as far as we are concerned.
“He had a complication in relation to breathing."
Sigudla added that paramedics were called to his residence after he struggled to breathe, and the family is grateful for their professionalism. Unfortunately, it was too late.
Nina Morris Lee, CEO of talent company Moonyeenn Lee & Associates, confirmed the actor’s death.
The talented actor became a household name for his work in the critically acclaimed film "Tsotsi," which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006, as well as in "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom".
Friends and family of the award-winning actor have gathered outside his house in Pretoria North following the announcement of his death.
"The River" creator Phathutshedza Makwarela and thespian John Kani were seen at the actor's home.
Makwarela speaking to media comforted the actor's fans, praising his immense talent. He described the actor as being full of love to every single person, how he would tease and have a nickname for everyone.
"To be in his presence was to experience love. The hours were long, and he was not as jovial as you might think Cobrizi was sometimes, he would be very quiet before shooting and sometimes you would think he wouldn't be able to do those things but as soon as the camera starts shooting the talent and magic comes alive."
Actor Ontshiametse Molekoa, who starred with the actor on "The River" speaking to the media shared how he last saw the actor a month ago and he was looking healthy.
"He was my role model, father, someone I would go to for advice on a lot of things I met him when I was nine years old, he took me to my first drama class. He is everything to me, I can't even think of my life without having a leader. It hits hard."
Heartfelt condolences have poured in following the actor’s death, his “Tsotsi” co-star Terry Pheto who has not posted on her Instagram feed since 2022, paid tribute to the actor in a post.
“I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Presley’s sudden passing. My heart goes out to his family and the rest of our friends and colleagues in the film industry.
“We shared an unforgettable moment when we won the Oscar. It’s a moment I will forever cherish. May his soul rest in peace. 💔”
