Global superstar Mariah Carey will be honoured at this year's MTV VMAs with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The award recognises artists whose visual storytelling has profoundly shaped pop culture.

First renamed after Jackson received it in 1991, the award’s history dates back to the very first VMAs in 1984, when David Bowie, The Beatles and director Richard Lester shared the honour.

Carey now joins an elite group of past recipients that includes mega stars such as Katy Perry, Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL COOL J, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott.

Carey, who recently announced that she will be releasing her 16th studio album, "Here for It All", in September, will make her first appearance at the annual ceremony in 20 years.

The "Obsessed" hitmaker is also set to perform a medley of her career-defining hit songs.

Her last medley performance, in 2005, included the chart-topper "We Belong Together" from her multi-platinum 10th album "The Emancipation of Mimi", which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Busta Rhymes, Ricky Martin, Sabrina Carpenter, DJ Snake and J Balvin are also set to perform at the prestigious event.

Known for her iconic videos including "Honey", "Heartbreaker" and "Touch My Body", the multi-Grammy-winner has sold more than 220 million albums worldwide and garnered 19 Billboard Hot 100  No.1 singles, more than any solo artist in history.

Meanwhile, "Here for It All", which debuts on September 26, is Carey's first full studio album since 2018's "Caution".

The awards show will be hosted by rapper LL COOL J and will air live from New York’s UBS Arena on Sunday, September 7.
