The passing of Mandla Elliot Mthembu, an esteemed business mogul and long-standing member of the African National Congress has been confirmed.

Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the ex-husband of South African media personality Khanyi Mbau, has died.
In a statement shared by his family, it was confirmed that the businessman and long-standing member of the African National Congress (ANC) died in New York on the evening of September 21, 2025.
Mthembu was admitted to hospital, where he suffered a second stroke. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke,
“Throughout his life, Mr Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his contribution to South Africa’s business landscape and his commitment to the values of the ANC. His legacy will be remembered by many across the country.”
The Mthembu family has requested privacy during the deeply painful time as they mourn the loss of a father, brother and friend.
Mthembu in 2006 had a customary marriage to popular actress, reality tv star and presenter Mbau. The two share a daughter Khanukani Khanz Mbau.
Mbau was labelled a gold digger when she married the then millionaire, Mthembu. Her lavish lifestyle grabbed the headlines; were dubbed the “it” couple, with their matching yellow lamborghinis.
However, their union was not just a flashy lifestyle; behind closed doors, their marriage was marred by abuse claims. They split in 2009.
After their split, Mthembu lived a life away from the public spotlight, while Mbau’s journey in the spotlight continued.
