Mariah Carey’s 16th studio album, “Here For It All”, is dropping this Friday, September 26, with fan excitement already high. However, they are not only talking about her new body of work.
They are also calling for the release of her long-rumoured grunge album after she played snippets of it during her Apple Music interview with SZA, which took place on Wednesday, September 24.
The unreleased album, known as “Someone’s Ugly Daughter”, was recorded in 1995 while Carey was also working on her hit record "Daydream".
At the time, the project was released under the band name “Chick”, with her friend Clarissa Dane on lead vocals, but Carey later confirmed that a version exists with her own voice at the forefront.
During the Apple Music “Flowers” series, where she appeared as SZA’s first guest, Carey reflected on that period and played a few songs from the vault shelved project.
The moment reignited interest from fans, many of whom took to social media, urging her to finally put the record out.
“Please release Someone’s Ugly Daughter with Mariah’s vocals! Please - Apple - Gamma- MARIAH! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 We need grungeRiah! ☺️,” wrote X user @mzandj.
Another X user @jwoah5 commented: “For my sanity, if she isn't going to release it, I don't want to hear about it anymore. Filing it away along w/ the rare cuts/B-sides tour.”
The 56-year-old singer first spoke about the album in her 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”, revealing that she created the songs as a way to cope with personal struggles.
“It was irreverent, raw and urgent,” she said, explaining how the sessions gave her freedom from the pressure of her pop career at the time.
Since then, Carey has hinted at different possibilities for the project, including collaborations with other artists or even new visuals to accompany its release.
In an interview earlier this year, she admitted she would “love to” put out some of the tracks but said she wants to do it the right way.
“I want to do videos, and I have so many ideas for that,” she said, hinting that fans might hear at least a few songs in the near future.
During the same Apple Music sit-down, the “#Beautiful” singer and SZA also previewed music from the upcoming record, including the title track and a gospel-inspired collaboration with The Clark Sisters.
“Here For It All” consists of 11 songs with multiple features from Anderso.Paak, The Clark Sisters, Kehlani and Shenseea.
