The South African music scene mourns the loss of DJ and producer Poizen (Caven Masetla-Moshoane).

Poizen, from Tzaneen in Limpopo, died in a car accident near Polokwane on August 30.

He was travelling with fellow artist Chymamusique, real name Collen Ntala Mmotla.

The two had performed in Mokopane the previous night. Chymamusique survived the crash. He is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit.

A journey through music

Poizen rose to prominence as one half of the house duo House Victimz, formed with DJ Shiloe. Together, they developed a loyal following in SA’s deep house community.

In 2019, Poizen announced his decision to leave the group and pursue a solo career. At the time, he released a statement to fans:

“Dear House Victimz fans, supporters, lovers and house heads. I love you all. It's sad to inform you of the amicable decision between me and my music mate, Shiloe. That I'm no longer part of House Victimz for some reason, I have decided to go solo."

"We are still boys, no bad blood at all. It has been an eventful journey filled with valuable lessons and great memories. Be on the lookout for my solo projects as Poizen.”

The move marked a turning point in his career, as he began experimenting with his own sound, producing tracks that gained recognition across the local house music scene.

Tributes from the industry

Since the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from fellow musicians, fans and music organisations.

DJ Lamiez Holworthy, who had performed with him the night before his passing, shared: “To say my heart is broken would be an understatement. I had the honour of playing at the launch of both Poizen and Chymamusique’s album launches just last night in Mokopane.

"They both decided to come support me at my next gig in Turf."

"Imagine waking up just a few hours later to hear of a tragic car accident? Pelo yaka e bohloko (my heart is sore), and I am at a loss for words. Please keep Poizen’s loved ones in your prayers and pray that Chyma pulls through.”

Singer Dwson remembered him as an influential figure in house music: “Rest easy, icon, bra Poizen. Your humility, selflessness and consistency left a mark on us all. The Voltage sound remains timeless. Your spirit and basslines live forever. Until we meet again.”

The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) also expressed its condolences:

“SAMRO is saddened by the passing of DJ and composer Caven Masetla, widely known as Poizen. A former member of House Victimz, Poizen was admired for his contributions to South African dance music."

"He will be remembered as a talented and beloved DJ, composer, music producer and creative force in the local music scene. SAMRO extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the music community at large.”

Producer D. General echoed this sentiment: “We will continue to celebrate you and your music… RIP Poizen.”

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye also stated after the accident: “Our hearts are with the families and next of kin of those who lost their lives, and at the same time, we wish a speedy recovery to those injured."

"I once more urge all road users to be patient on the road. I am seriously concerned about these accidents, which are a result of recklessness.”

Though his life was cut short, Poizen’s contribution to South African house music is undeniable.

His work with House Victimz and his solo projects have left behind a catalogue that continues to inspire fans and fellow musicians.

As tributes continue to flow, his songs remain a reminder of his talent, dedication and the role he played in shaping the sound of local house music.

Five songs that keep his spirit alive

Poizen’s music remains a lasting part of his legacy. Here are five songs that continue to carry his spirit.

  • “Is’nqanda Mathe”: Taken from his recent album “Ngiphe", released last month, this song is a collaboration with DJ Stokie and Mthandazo Gatya. It tells the story of a man who has fallen in love, expressing that she is the one destined to grow his family empire. He becomes nervous and overwhelmed in her presence, yet ultimately she is the one chosen. The lyrics, “Nguwe is’nqanda mathe sam,” loosely mean the lover who restores your dignity and wipes away what makes you vulnerable.
  • "Shona Malanga": A collaboration with E-FUNK and Young Nator, this track celebrates the joy of the party lifestyle. The lyrics describe indulging in the pleasures of life, travelling to Dubai, enjoying music, beautiful company and unforgettable nights. It’s a song that captures the freedom and excitement of youth.
  • “Vulani”: A jazz-inspired instrumental featuring Nani Experience, known for his inventive trumpet playing and bass guitar work. Without vocals, the track takes listeners on an emotional journey, blending different moods and textures. It highlights Poizen’s versatility as a producer and his ability to craft music that transcends language.
  • “Amen for 8 Years Prayer”: Released during Poizen’s time with House Victimz, this track marked an important milestone for the duo. It introduced the group to the country through its remarkable production and remains one of their most meaningful works. The song embodies their collective spirit and reflects the roots of Poizen’s career before he pursued solo projects.
  • “Uthando”: Meaning love in isiZulu, this soulful collaboration with Kaleido and Bonj combines heartfelt vocals with deep house rhythms. The track explores the depth and complexity of love, capturing both joy and vulnerability. Warm chords and steady basslines highlight Poizen and Shiloe’s signature sound, making it a standout track that showcases the emotional side of house music.
