In January, Sjava released the “Inkanyezi Live” EP, and I remember being immediately captivated by its energy and cultural depth.

Now, he is back with “Inkanyezi Live 2.0”, which dropped on Friday, September 5.

This five-track EP runs for 44 minutes, and I must say that Sjava has maintained the magic that made the first EP so compelling.

His live energy translates effortlessly into this recording, and I found myself fully absorbed from the first note to the last.

The EP opens with “Sanibonani”, and I was struck by how Sjava effortlessly celebrates South Africa’s heritage.

The title means “Hello”, and the track highlights the diversity of greetings across the country. There is a subtle reggae influence that adds texture without distracting from the cultural grounding.

I love how this song immediately sets the tone for the EP, blending tradition with accessibility, and making the listener feel connected to both the music and the culture it reflects.

“Gusheshe,” the second track, shifts the mood with an mbaqanga rhythm.

Listening to it, I felt the tension and nostalgia in the lyrics, which reference a car that reminds Sjava of a brother and touch on experiences of caution and survival.

The song balances rhythm and narrative in a way that drew me in, making me reflect on trust and danger in human relationships. I found myself paying close attention to the story while still wanting to move to the beat.

The third track, “Moya Wami”, is reflective and introspective.

The lyrics speak of life’s journey, the difficulties along the way and the reactions of others - some happy, some mournful. I felt a deep sense of empathy while listening, as the song captures the complexities of human emotion in a way that feels genuine.

It is the kind of track that makes me pause and consider my own experiences while still enjoying the music.

“Mdumise”, the fourth track, is where I felt a spiritual resonance. Sjava praises God and reflects on the guidance received throughout life.

Lines like, “Amaphupho wami uwafhezile / ungikhumbulile / awuzange ungilahle / kuloluhambo ungiphelezelile / bengeke ngihambe ngedwa / konke ebengikakuboni ungitshengisile / konke ebekufihliwe ungivezelile / I know God works in mysterious ways,” loosely translated as, “You accompanied me on my path; I would never have walked this journey alone. You revealed to me everything I needed to see that was hidden," struck me deeply.

I felt the sincerity and gratitude in his voice, and I could not help but reflect on my own journey while listening. This track feels like the heart of the EP, grounding it in faith and reflection.

The final track, “Amashidi Amhlophe”, which means “white sheets”, brings the listener into a more intimate space.

The lyrics describe a simple moment of human connection: visiting a loved one and preparing to spend the night. I appreciated how this track contrasts with the broader themes of community and spirituality, adding a personal and tender touch to the EP.

Across all five tracks, I noticed that Sjava maintained the energy and sing-along quality that made the first EP so memorable.

I was impressed by the careful craftsmanship of each song - the writing, arrangement and performance all demonstrate his skill.

This EP does more than capture live performance; it tells stories, educates and engages listeners on multiple levels.

I can honestly say that “Inkanyezi Live 2.0” reinforces Sjava’s role as one of South Africa’s most compelling contemporary artists. I found myself returning to the tracks repeatedly, noticing new details with every listen. The EP has a way of drawing you in and leaving you thinking, while still being incredibly enjoyable.

For me, this EP is a reminder of why Sjava’s music continues to connect. It is vibrant, thoughtful and emotionally rich.

I am already anticipating his live shows this summer, because the songs from both the first EP and this new one are firmly planted in my mind.

“Inkanyezi Live 2.0” is a remarkable follow-up, and I have no hesitation in giving it a full thumbs up.
