Award-winning actress Lunathi Mampofu is receiving praise for her powerful performance in Mzansi Magic’s latest drama series, “Inimba”.
In the show, she plays Zoleka Mabandla, a driven woman forced to choose between her family and her career, a role that has resonated deeply with her.
Speaking to IOL Entertainment, Mampofu unpacked the character and the storyline describing it as an emotional experience and pure healing.
“There’s a lot of things that we as women deal with and not to say men don’t, in this story but I’ve also had to deal with in my life, as a single parent and the ups and downs, the difficult decisions that we have to make.
She described her emotional connection to the role, saying: “For me, I am constantly emotional when I think of Zoleka.”
Mampofu also revealed that her mother has been particularly fond of this role, comparing it to her past performances.
“It’s between ‘The River’ and ‘Inimba’,” said Mampofu when asked about her mother’s favourite character that she has portrayed.
“She’s loving it, she’s watched everything previously but here she’s religious and even on ‘The River’. I think on shows like ‘Fatal Seduction’, she loved that I stepped out of my comfort zone and I’m blessed enough to have parents who are liberal.
Zoleka's seemingly perfect life, a new family and a burgeoning career, takes a turn when a compelling job offer forces a difficult choice. Her husband, Hlathi, demands she prioritize their family over her ambition, leading to a profound sacrifice.
Twenty years later, Zoleka has become a successful tech mogul. Now, she seeks to rebuild her life and reconnect with Qhawe, the daughter she was forced to leave behind in the story of "Inimba."
