From family markets to live concerts, Durban is buzzing this weekend

The Pavilion Night Market

This Saturday, March 29, the Pavilion Shopping Centre will transform its undercover parking area into a vibrant sunset market, celebrating the arrival of autumn.

From 3pm until 10pm, visitors of all ages are invited to explore a diverse array of stalls featuring crafts, food, specialty buys and live musical performances.

This one-day event aims to support micro-businesses and pop-up entrepreneurs, providing a platform for showcasing unique products while offering an exciting shopping and dining experience.

With over 30 stalls on display, attendees can find everything from bespoke garments and handcrafted jewellery to vintage wares and delightful toys.

There will be plenty of opportunities for browsing and gift hunting, ensuring that everyone leaves with something special.

The market also caters to gastronomy enthusiasts, featuring artisanal options, street food, snacks and indulgent desserts that promise to tantalise taste buds and satisfy any appetite.

For family-friendly entertainment, the event will present a vibrant lineup of live music, creating a lively atmosphere as the sun sets.

Musical acts include Many Moore, a dynamic acoustic pop jazz trio from Pietermaritzburg.

Their sound, influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, Norah Jones and Bob Marley, blends urban poetic soul with a unique charm.

Many Moore have gained popularity by sharing the stage with well-known artists such as Sjava and Desmond & The Tutus and will bring their captivating performances to the market. 

Whether you're in search of hidden treasures, delicious food or simply a fun outing with family and friends head down to the market.

"Zethe on Tour"

Empangeni singer Zethe is set to captivate audiences with her debut album, "Breathe", as she embarks on an album tour in Durban, a city that has significantly influenced her artistic journey.

The album, which Zethe describes as "a sonic voyage of healing, reflection and resilience," aims to provide solace amidst the chaos of daily life.

"The music is rooted in the concept of 'Ikhambi' (music as medicine), providing breathing amidst the chaos we face in our daily lives, reclaiming our humanity, summoning courage, nurturing hope and finding solace in love and prayer," Zethe expressed.

This philosophy resonates deeply in the album’s tracks, including the stirring "Ukukhanya" (There’s light) and poignant "Uthando" (A Love Letter), which echo her personal journey of resilience.

The upcoming performance at The Chairman on Friday, March 28, will not only showcase her new work but it will also serve as a homecoming for the musician, who stated: "Durban holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I studied music, where I found my voice. Performing here feels like a homecoming, a chance to share 'Breathe' with the city that helped shape me."

"Fine Music Festival"

This Sunday, March 30, music lovers are in for a rare treat as two exquisite concerts bring together the vibrant sounds of Baroque and orchestral music in one delightful afternoon.

The day will begin with the Baroque 2000 concert at St James in Morningside, at 11.30am, followed by the KZN Philharmonic’s Sinfonia concert at St Thomas Church on Musgrave Road, at 3pm. 

Patrons who attend the morning concert, can hold onto their Baroque ticket for the Sinfonia concert and get 10% off their ticket for the afternoon concert, if buying tickets at box office.   

2025 marks a significant milestone in the world of classical music as it is designated as Bach year. This year, the influential German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach would have celebrated his 340th birthday on March 31.

To honour this occasion, both concerts will feature works by the prolific composer, allowing patrons to experience the beauty and complexity of his music.

"Family Fete" 

This Saturday, March 29, the Alliance Francaise in Windermere is set to transform into a vibrant hub of creativity as it hosts a delightful family fete to honour Francophonie and World Theatre Day.

Organised in collaboration with the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People South Africa, the event promises fun-filled activities for families in the community.

Children and their parents are invited to immerse themselves in a myriad of artistic experiences. Attendees can look forward to an eclectic mix of dance, music and theatre performances that showcase the richness of culture.

A particularly exciting feature of the day will be a shadow theatre workshop. Young creators aged eight and above will have the chance to delve into the magic of storytelling through shadow plays.
