THOLSI Pillay's 2025 Forbes Woman Africa Summit Award for Champion of Entertainment Promotion is a reminder that those working behind the scenes are valued and appreciated.
Pillay, who resides in Johannesburg, said the recognition was not just for her but for every dedicated individual, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring creativity and vision to life.
"In entertainment, the spotlight often shines on the artists, but it takes a whole team to build and sustain a successful career. I hope it inspires more recognition for those shaping the industry from behind the curtain," said Pillay this week.
The event was held recently at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria.
Pillay, the co-owner of Kellerman Music, has played an instrumental role in shaping the career of three-time Grammy award-winning flutist, composer, and producer Wouter Kellerman. Their independent journey - without the backing of a major record label - has proven that passion, perseverance, and innovation can rival the biggest players in the industry.
With five Grammy nominations, nine South African Music Awards out of 13 nominations, and three number one albums on the US Billboard Charts, Kellerman’s career is a testament to Pillay's visionary leadership.
From securing accolades such as the Alumni Dignitas Award from the University of Johannesburg and an honorary doctorate of art and design from the Tshwane University of Technology, to orchestrating performances on global stages like Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony, Pillay has been at the helm, ensuring every milestone is met with excellence.
Her impact extends beyond Kellerman’s personal success.
Pillay played a pivotal role in bringing South African choirs into the global spotlight, including facilitating their journey to the finals of America’s Got Talent. She worked closely with the Ndlovu Youth Choir and Mzansi Youth Choir, orchestrating viral performances that captured the world’s attention and opened new doors for South African talent on an unprecedented scale.
Pillay is also a voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs). In addition, she has co-produced and co-directed several of Kellerman’s music videos. She was instrumental in helping Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode secure a Grammy award alongside Kellerman for their collaborative project, further showcasing her ability to bring South African talent to the world stage.
Pillay, who was born and bred in Shallcross in Durban, has definitely come a long way from her humble beginnings.
"As a child, I dreamed of becoming a lawyer so that I could help people, especially given the circumstances of our country and the hardships I witnessed during my humble beginnings. My parents, Ruthie and Vigee Mudaly, were deeply committed to helping others and their kindness inspired me to follow the same," said Pillay.
She said her parents worked hard to provide for her and her two sisters, Rani and Viveshinee.
"My father worked in maintenance, while my mother was employed at a framing company. Through their dedication and perseverance, they ensured we had opportunities to grow and succeed, shaping the foundation of who we are today.
"My fondest memories of growing up in my community revolved around the strong sense of togetherness. Everyone knew everyone, creating a warm and supportive environment. It was wonderful how all us children would come together to play soccer and cricket in the streets. We also walked to school, feeling a sense of freedom, even though, in many ways, our lives were still restricted."
She matriculated at Shallcross High. Financial constraints made it difficult for her parents to afford university for her and her siblings. As a result, they had to work, while studying through correspondence.
"Since I was unable to pursue my dream profession, I chose to study human resources. I later gained experience in mediation through the CCMA and furthered my studies in pension law, among other areas. I eventually worked for the Bargaining Council for the iron and steel industry for many years until I transitioned into the music world in 2006."
Pillay said music had always intrigued her. She grew up listening to her mother sing, while she worked.
"My mom, uncles and aunts would also sing at functions. We attended Hindu services at our temple every Sunday, although I didn’t always enjoy waking up so early for them. However, I loved the services themselves. They were deeply fulfilling, grounding us and reminding us that the values we sang about in devotion should be practised in our daily lives.
"I've been around music and at school attended music classes and played the recorder and sometimes the flute. I also had a small music band and I'm sure we made fools of ourselves."
She met Wouter 30 years ago through friends.
"He told me he was a flute player. At the time, I thought, 'Been there, done it and got the T-shirt and I'm never going to listen to your music'. And yet, here I am, 30 years later.
"When I finally heard Wouter's compositions, I was amazed. It was nothing like I had expected. I encouraged him to follow his heart and record an album. Wouter's mission has always been to spread positive energy, love, peace and tolerance through his music.
"So in 2006, I decided to join him on this journey. This has always been my purpose and passion to contribute to making the world a better place and through music, I found my way to do exactly that."
During Women's Month, she said her message, especially to young girls, was to believe in themselves and never let circumstances define their potential.
"You are strong, capable and deserving of every opportunity that comes your way. Embrace your dreams with confidence, work hard and stay true to your values. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you and never be afraid to use your voice. The world needs your unique light. Shine brightly and make a difference."
She and Wouter are currently working on new collaborations and an upcoming album.
"There will be more music, more shows and a continued commitment to spreading love and positivity through music to the world. We also have exciting international performances lined up and we look forward to connecting with audiences across different cultures. Additionally, we are exploring creative projects that blend music with meaningful storytelling, ensuring that our work continues to inspire and uplift people everywhere."
