Rating: 8/10
3BHK is a tender, compelling family drama that follows Vasudevan and his family in their decade-long journey toward one simple, powerful goal - owning a home of their own.
The film begins in the year 2006 and introduces us to Vasudevan (R Sarathkumar), a humble factory worker, living with his wife Shanti (Devyani) and their children Prabhu (Siddharth) and Aarthi (Meetha Raghunath).
Prabhu is unhappy with the new home the family has rented and wishes for something better. His sister Aarthi begins to calculate how much they would need to move into a better place and a place of their own. The family begin to work towards this goal, setting monthly milestones, working longer hours and starting a mini snacks business from home.
However, with all this extra effort they are unable to get their place at the first attempt. As the years pass, the family continuously try to work towards their own home, while battling life as a middle class family and working through some of life’s demons.
3BHK has scenes and feelings that will resonate with us all and often move your emotions. We see the plot and the life of this family mainly through Prabhu.
Siddharth excellently portrays the role, maturing from a teenager to an adult to a responsible human driven to achieve and change the fate of his family. He is effortless in his 40th film as an actor.
R Sarathkumar portrays a realistic role as Vasudevan, the father, who is gentle, and subtle yet firmly stands for what he believes is right for his family - often sacrificing his own dreams.
Devyani, reuniting with Sarathkumar after Suryavamsam, is the emotional anchor of the film. Meetha Raghunath perfectly embodies a daughter with dreams and responsibilities in modern times, while Chaitra, in the role of the daughter-in-law, mirrors that of Devyani, serving as Siddharth’s emotional anchor.
Amrit Ramnath debuts in Tamil as the music director of this heartfelt movie providing soulful music and a melodious background score. The album features the voices of Shreya Ghoshal, Uthara Unnikrishnan, Haricharan, Pradeep Kumar and Chinmaayi with Kanavallam and Thullum Nenjum standing out. The music greatly contributes to the overall feel of the film.
Director Sri Ganesh, in his third outing as a director, hits gold with this project bringing every aspect of a family drama into this film and thankfully selecting a cast that beautifully executed his narrative. The audience is also treated with the voice of actor Karthi, who serves as the narrator.
3BHK is streaming on Prime Video and is a perfect family drama.
