IN A WORLD often consumed by the rush of everyday life, Thiloshini Naidoo stands as a quiet force of compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication.
For over two decades, she has been at the heart of an organisation that offers dignity in life’s most difficult moments. As the board director, day-care manager, and fundraising convenor at the Dolphin Coast Hospice Association, Naidoo has helped guide countless families through the painful, complex, and often misunderstood journey of terminal illness.
“Dolphin Coast Hospice provides palliative care, emotional support, and end-of-life care to individuals and families affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in our community. It is not just about physical care, it is about bringing comfort, humanity, and peace when it is needed most,” said Naidoo.
Now, in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, her message is clear: awareness can save lives.
“Celebrating awareness is crucial because it educates people about the importance of early detection, screening and treatment. It also helps reduce stigma and promotes support for those affected. By raising awareness, we can strive towards a future where breast cancer is detected earlier, treated more effectively, and ultimately, lives are saved.”
Naidoo’s 23-year tenure with the hospice has brought her face-to-face with patients in all stages of life and illness, especially those battling breast cancer, a diagnosis that still touches thousands of lives every year across South Africa.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month holds significant importance for us at Dolphin Coast Hospice. It is an opportunity to raise awareness, promote early detection, and support those affected by the disease. We are proud to be part of a community that comes together to make a difference.”
Her words carry the weight of years spent walking alongside patients and families during some of the most emotionally charged moments of their lives.
“Working with cancer patients and survivors has been a humbling experience. Their strength, resilience, and courage in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. Despite the challenges they face, they continue to amaze me with their positivity, hope and determination. They are a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to overcome even the toughest battles.”
At Dolphin Coast Hospice, care is not limited to pain management or medications. It extends to emotional healing, holistic support, and creating a space where patients feel safe, heard, and loved.
“To those navigating the complex journey of cancer, I want you to know that you are seen, you are heard, and you are deeply loved. Your strength is inspiring and your courage is a beacon of hope to those around you. You are warriors.
“Remember that you do not have to face this journey alone. Our hospice community is here to support you every step of the way. Hold on to hope, cherish every moment, and know that you are not just fighting for yourself, but for the loved ones who care for you deeply. You are stronger than you think, and you are loved more than you know.”
As the fundraising convenor, she also works tirelessly to ensure the hospice has the resources it needs to continue offering free and accessible services, often relying on the goodwill of the community, volunteers, and donors.
“Every cent we raise goes into patient care, community education, and emotional support services. Our work is fuelled by generosity and belief in the human spirit.”
For Naidoo, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than just a campaign, it is a living, breathing commitment to honour the women and men who have walked through the doors of the hospice, to continue educating communities about early detection, and to extend a hand to those still fighting.
“Never underestimate the power of your spirit. Every step forward is a victory. We believe in you, and we are here to walk this journey with you."
