Professor Kiren Thathiah launches his second book 'Sezela: A Season in the Sun'

PROFESSOR Kiren Thathiah launched his second book Sezela: A Season in the Sun on Sunday at the Umhlanga Apart Hotel. 

Thathiah was born in Durban and, after a few years in Umkomaas, his father was promoted to the primary school in Sezela in the 1970s. He completed his high school studies at Umzinto Indian High School before enrolling at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW) for a degree in fine art. 

Thathiah completed several postgraduate qualifications in arts, education and public management and joined the academic staff as a lecturer in fine art and history of art. After achieving the rank of senior lecturer at UDW he was appointed head of visual arts and design at Vaal University of Technology and subsequently a research associate at the University of Johannesburg.

He was recently included in the University of Pretoria's exhibition of the hundred most influential South African artists of the last century. 

His artworks are included in national museums and art galleries as well as corporate collections in South Africa and internationally such as the Durban Art Gallery, South African National Gallery, Tatham Art Gallery, Anglo-American Collection and the Diamler Benz Collection in Munich.

Thathiah is currently involved in personal creative and community projects which include a second "A Place in Time" music album with SA Local Content, writing a sequel to the novel 'Sezela: A Season in the Sun," and an exhibition of his recent artworks. He is also developing an illustrated version of the Sezela book.
