THE Tamil New Year, Puthandu, marks the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai. It signifies a fresh start, celebrated with traditional rituals, family gatherings, and special food. As we welcome the new year, the Natal Tamil Vedic Society Trust, in collaboration with The Southern Roots Residency, presents a Bharata Natyam recital by K Sarveshan, aiming to uplift South African hearts with South Indian culture.

A collaborative initiative hosted by the trust, The Suriya Project, Aaraadhana, and the KS Natya Kollective creates a space for engaging with the cultural traditions of South India, while living and practising within a South African context. Rooted in learning, exchange, and community, it brings together artists and participants in a shared exploration of heritage and contemporary experience.

As part of this programme, Bharatha Natyam artist K Sarveshan joins as a visiting artist, leading a series of masterclasses and workshops. Through this process, dancers from across South Africa have engaged with the technical, expressive, and cultural foundations of this classical dance form, while deepening their individual and collective practice.

Bharatha Natyam remains a specialised and less widely practised art form, carrying with it generations of knowledge, discipline, and cultural memory. Through this work, the residency contributes to keeping these traditions alive, while opening pathways for the next generation of dancers to learn, embody, and carry them forward.

Sarveshan is a distinguished South African-born Bharatha Natyam artist and choreographer based in Tamil Nadu, India, known for blending classical rigour with contemporary expression. Trained by renowned gurus, the Dhananjayans, he is recognised for his "Best Dancer" award at the 2017 Madras Music Academy Spirit of Youth Festival.

He began his training in Cape Town under Savithri Naidoo and Darshana Rama before furthering his expertise in Chennai under the guidance of Shantha and VP Dhananjayan.

His work often bridges traditional Bharatha Natyam with elements of Kalaripayattu, yoga, and contemporary movement to foster a deeper, intimate "sowkhyam" (bliss) in performance.

His recent projects see him as an active performer and instructor, recently conducting workshops and performing as an artist-in-residence during the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre's Southern Roots Residency in 2026.

Sarveshan has received accolades such as the “Natya Purna” from Bharat Kalanjali and “Yuva Kalaa Bhaarathi” from Bharat Kalachar.

The three day Bharatha Nayam Masterclass workshop will take place from April 17 to 19 at the Natal Tamil Vedic Society, Tamil Federation Hall, at 42 Silverglen Drive, Durban.

A solo Bharat Nayam recital by Sarveshan will also be held on April 18 at 5pm at the Tamil Federation Hall. For more information, call Thaniga Moodley on 073 776 2915.
