In July and August, audiences in Durban and Johannesburg will be treated to a theatrical experience as Vishwa Shakti presents Beyond the Waves, a dance-drama that delves into the narrative of Indian indentured labourers in South Africa
With a cast of 70 actors and dancers, the production aims to highlight the struggles, resilience, and enduring hope of those who crossed oceans in search of a better future.
The concept designer and producer, Kamal Maharaj, along with his wife Vanita Maharaj, who serves as the director, co-wrote the script that brings a vital chapter of South Africa’s history to the stage.
"This will be a moving dance-drama inspired by true events, telling the story of the struggles, resilience, and enduring hope of indentured labourers," said Kamal Maharaj.

"It is the first live theatrical production of its kind in South Africa and brings an important chapter of history to the stage through a powerful blend of movement, drama, and visual storytelling. The production makes use of high-technical LED screens, creating immersive visual landscapes that transport audiences across oceans and generations.
"As the performance unfolds, audiences will witness the challenges these workers faced, from overcrowded ships navigating dark oceans, to the arduous sugar cane fields of South Africa. Through stirring dance sequences and expressive narratives, Beyond the Waves portrays not just hardship, but a triumphant spirit of survival and unity. It reflects the pain of separation, the strength of community, and the unbreakable spirit of those who laid the foundations for future generations."
Maharaj said a particularly touching scene featured an old man standing by the sea, reminiscing. When questioned by his grandchildren about what he was watching, he pointed beyond the horizon, whispering: "Beyond the waves … that is where our story began".
"As the ocean breeze carries his memories back in time, the stage unfolds the emotional journey of thousands who crossed the seas from India to the sugar cane fields of South Africa. This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the production, as it evokes the memories and histories carried across generations."
He said this narrative represented the journey of countless individuals who were lured into indentured servitude with the hope of improving their lives, only to face adversities.
"They endured unimaginable struggles, harsh labour, separation, discrimination and loss, yet through pain and perseverance, they carried with them their language, music, faith, culture and dreams. From the crowded ships crossing dark oceans to the plantations of Natal, from suffering to survival, from survival to triumph, Beyond the Waves tells the moving story of how generations rose above hardship to build families, communities, businesses and a lasting legacy in South Africa. This is a story that began across the sea and continues to live in every generation that followed."
