In Vancouver, a family home designed by Sha Wang of Atelier Fēn beautifully blends two generations' tastes, resulting in a space that offers both timeless elegance and modern simplicity. The bespoke home is a masterpiece that successfully combines the sleek, minimalist black-and-white aesthetic of the Gen Z children with their parents' love for high-end materials like marble and high-gloss finishes.
The interior design, which began in 2019, reflects the evolving dynamics of a family from China. It incorporates sophisticated craftsmanship, personalized spaces, and a harmonious design that encourages relaxation while maintaining an aura of luxury. With a neutral, serene colour palette including beige, white, gold, camel, black, and blue-gray, the home is as inviting as it is visually striking. Natural materials like wood, stone, linen, and wool bring warmth and texture to each room.
However, designing this home came with its challenges. The homeowners, a couple in their 50s, desired a luxurious, warm feel, preferring marble and high-gloss finishes. Meanwhile, their children in their 20s favoured a clean, minimalist design. Wang notes, “One of the biggest challenges was accommodating these differing preferences. The homeowners revised the floor plan 13 times before we reached the final design.”
Despite these shifts in direction, Wang’s commitment to a design that encourages self-expression and growth prevailed. She was able to create spaces that resonated deeply with the family members, giving each one a sense of belonging. The result is a home that not only caters to differing tastes but grows with the family.
“The house was completed just as the children’s lives were changing. It’s been a beautiful and emotional journey watching their stories unfold while seeing them embrace the home I designed for them,” Wang shares.
Key design highlights include a striking family room with Apparatus Studio Lantern pendants, custom millwork, and B&B Italia’s sculptural armchair. The kitchen’s sculptural island, designed with hidden storage and geometric brass accents, is made even more elegant by Panda White marble that recalls Asian watercolour art.
Meanwhile, the main ensuite offers a serene, refined atmosphere with neutral tones, cosy linens, and ambient lighting, creating a retreat-like space.
The 8,000-square-foot home features six bedrooms, a luxury spa, a theater, a gaming area, and expansive lounges across three levels. The basement serves as an entertainment hub, a space to relax and socialize with family and friends.
This carefully crafted home in Vancouver stands as a testament to the art of interior design, blending functional artistry with luxury, and offering a perfect balance for both the present and the future.
