THE SAPS, metro police and other allied or private security personnel have the prime objective of safety and security.

Well done to those who undertake required duties in an acceptable and competent manner. Please keep the good work in this very important sphere of life.

One’s safety and security cannot have a price tag attached thereto. It is a constitutional right, as per Chapter 2 of the RSA Constitution (Act 108 0f 1996). Regrettably there is much amiss in this key area with the general belief, for good reason, that crooks, criminals and fraudsters have “more rights” than those in society – the majority – who are civil and law abiding.

It is rather mind-boggling how crooked and rotten the police top brass are. The recent explosive revelations at the Madlanga Commission are both startling and unbelievable.

How those who have the legal responsibility to serve and protect have become corrupt and tainted, leaves one in total dismay and disappointment.

They have connived and colluded with hardened criminals and tenderpreneurs to amass ill-gotten gains that run into billions of rand, thus robbing both the state and its citizens.

Hopefully, this serious issue will be attended to by President Cyril Ramaphosa, with sufficient public pressure exerted on him so that he will act decisively and quickly, in tandem with other entities and agencies such as the SAPS, NPA, SIU and others. The rot is deep, and criminality must be eradicated.

On a daily basis, we find the total absence of police and allied personnel when and where needed. Visible policing is a key factor in security and safety, and serves as a major deterrent to criminals.

Policing and allied functions are of crucial importance and must be undertaken competently and timeously by personnel who are loyal, dedicated and competent. In this way, we will be able to live in a safe and secure environment knowing that our vital constitutional rights are upheld. Without proper policing and effective execution of required duties in this domain, we will sadly revert to the dark ages where lawlessness, chaos and anarchy abounded, with an inferior quality of life.
