South African DJ and music producer, Prince Kaybee, recently shared the reason for his weight loss focus.
The “Fetch Your Life” hitmaker, whose real name is Kabelo Motsamai, shared a post on X, detailing that his obsession with weight loss actually stems from a personal loss.
“My mother died due to obesity related illnesses. Obesity related illnesses kill 30,000 people annually in South Africa, surpassing HIV,” he shared.
The music producer’s post took an emotional route as he continued to share that he feels like he failed his mother, who sadly passed away in September 2025.
Kaybee added that he lost his mom due to obesity-related illnesses.
“My obsession with weight loss isn’t some joke; it has a deep scar that reminds me I could’ve guided my mother better in being more present enough to manage her weight, failed as a son, but I'm not gonna fail anyone moving forward. GET TO WORK!” he wrote.
This is not the first time that he has spoken about weight loss and raised awareness on obesity.
In December, he urged people to be mindful of their weight as they grow older and opened up about his late mother’s illness.
In the post, he shared that his mother suffered from severe joint problems due to being overweight.
“My mother died because she was overweight, all her joints were gone,” he wrote.
He added that over time, her condition worsened, ultimately impacting her ability to move.
“What was severe was her intervertebral discs. They were damaged to a point she couldn’t walk. Her spine from the X-ray looked horrible. There were other complications, but I believe if she was not overweight, we could’ve saved her,” he shared.
Since her passing, the DJ has been raising awareness on obesity, opening up about his weight loss journey and encouraging his fans to also maintain a healthy lifestyle.
A lot of South African celebrities have embarked on a weight loss journey since the beginning of last year.
This includes Anele Mdoda-Mgudlwa, Vele Manenje, Gugu Gumede, Naledi Mallela, Lungile Thabethe and Vuyokazi Nciweni, who were all candid about their health journeys.
Many of them have taken to social media to share the reasons behind their decisions and what goals they want to achieve.
