How to care for your tools

I have been asked for some advice about tools and how to care for them.

Good-quality tools are expensive and we all tend to buy on impulse. So before you invest a small fortune on a new tool, think carefully about how many times you are likely to use it.

There are many excellent hire shops around and you would be surprised at the range of tools they carry.

If you can’t find what you want in a hire shop, resort to that well-used quiz show line “phone a friend”, as long as you remember to return the tool afterwards or you might find your circle of friends shrinking.

If you have nothing better to do next weekend, go into your garage or tool shed and do a general clean-up. I guarantee that you own tools that you had forgotten you had.

Also, things tend to get pushed further into the back of the cupboard and this type of neglect means they will go rusty or blunt, making them unusable when you really need them. Give them a good clean, lightly oiling where necessary. Then pack them away neatly and accessibly.

If you are stuck for space there are many excellent storage and racking systems on the market. - Weekend Argus
