If you are a lover of all things bright and beautiful, then this year’s colour palette will appeal to you.

A fruit salad of shades with orange, bright pink, lime green, turquoise and canary yellow thrown in the mix makes for funky fabric choices.

For those who favour a more minimalist or even eclectic monochrome look, it is good to know that black and grey are making a commercial return to the home front.

“The seasonal trend remains toward open and clean ethnic geometric designs, and more neutral, natural textured fabrics for large upholstered pieces with colour and pattern used for the accent pieces,” says Sheila Dovey, marketing manager for St Leger and Viney, a leading distributor of fine furnishing fabrics and wallpapers.

The latest summer collection from St Leger and Viney, “The Road to Oxiana”, offers a laid-back chic vibe that will harmoniously blend with any modern and contemporary setting.

“Think ancient crafts of the East, kelims, copper, spice colours and woven, hand-finished textures,” says Dovey.

The intricacies of vibrant mosaics and the architectural magnificence of 1 000-year-old mosques have been translated into a collection of beautiful, durable and tactile fabrics.

A focus on hand-crafted textiles with personal attention to detail weaves a strong thread through many of the textiles on offer this season.

“We are seeing a lot of beautiful embroidery and hand-blocked printing on natural fibres like cotton, linen and silk.”

If you have not given your walls much thought since last agonising over paint chips, maybe it is time to consider the option of wallpaper.

Make a statement with an affordable and stylish way to revitalise a tired-looking room. Since the new easy-hang wallpapers, called non-woven wallpapers, are much easier to hang and even easier to remove, you can try a trend without fear of living with it forever.

Check out two new looks from Shand Kydd, drawing on archival material, bringing a sense of nostalgia, but interpreted for today’s contemporary taste.

Urns, trellises, ancient architectural details and damasks sit happily alongside modern geometrics and clean classic black and white imagery.
