Blowing new ideas into the art of ambient and moody lighting is Durbanglass artist Sarah Whitaker.
“There is something magical about the warm glow of candlelight reflecting through a piece of glass,” says Whitaker, who has combined her passion for glass and candles to produce the ideal décor accessory for any indoor or outdoor space.
“The glass oil candle, unlike a traditional wax candle, has a small tube that holds the external wick in place,” says Whitaker.
“Once alight, the wick uses capillary action to draw candle oil up to the flame.”
Using hand-blown borosilicate glass, which is the same as Pyrex, means the glass candle will not crack when heated. The external wick does not burn away and never needs replacing.
Oil candles burn with a flame that is long-burning, clean and odourless. There is no smoke or soot residue.
To complete the final look, Whitaker places the glass candle in a shaped glass holder made of recycled glass.
With a flick of a match, this innovative lighting option will create the right mood and atmosphere for any occasion.
“The glass candles make an elegant table centre-piece without the problem of messy melting wax and having to relight the wick each time a gust of wind blows out the flame.”
