South African actress Ama Qamata, famously known for her roles in “Blood & Water” and “Gomora,” has been announced as the new ambassador for L’Oréal Paris in sub-Saharan Africa.

She follows in the footsteps of fellow local actress turned Hollywood star Thuso Mbedu.

An intimate celebration, hosted by Pamela Mtanga, was held in Johannesburg, where Qamata was revealed as the beauty brand’s sub-Saharan Africa ambassador, surrounded by her family, friends and media.

Qamata remarked that she was excited for the chapter with L’Oreal Paris. The moment was not without tears, as Qamata’s mother could not hold back the emotions.

“I’m so excited. This is like so many months of preparation and I feel like a pregnant woman who has just given birth.

“I really wanted this partnership to be intentional. I want to not only celebrate myself but also other women and that was something I was very intentional about when speaking to the group.

The unveiling of Qamata as the ambassador comes as she is mourning the passing of her father and she reflected that one of the last conversations they had was about the achievement.

“It’s not always a pretty thing; confidence and resilience. It really comes with hardships, that's why, particularly with what’s happening in my life now, it’s just such a testament not only to God’s glory but just his grace and mercy and how he has looked after me.

“I don’t know where I get the strength to be standing here right now.”

Qamata is headed to Paris to walk the L'Oréal Paris fashion show, also known as Le Défilé. Fellow South Africans Bonang Matheba and Mbedu have previously strutted on the runway.

Speaking to IOL, Qamata explained that the biggest intention for her when working with the beauty brand was to be in alignment with her values and principles.

“One of the biggest values that L'Oreal has is celebrating uniqueness, celebrating beauty, celebrating women. I was really excited to be a part of that.

“That is one of the biggest things that I want to champion for this journey is that we're all worth it, and I know that we say that and it feels very vain. But I think everything that I've gone through in my journey getting here it has not been an easy one.

“It's not been pretty, but I'm here. I just hope that people know that from adversity, that's where your confidence is, that's where your strength comes from. It's not a weakness.

L’Oréal Paris has had partnerships with South African women Bonang Matheba, Leanne Manas, Liesl Laurie-Mthombeni, Anlia Etzebeth and Thembi Seete, to name a few.
