Gel manicures have a way of quietly becoming the go-to option, turning what starts as a once-off treat into a routine because the appeal is simply undeniable.

The shine stays flawless for weeks, there are no chips to fix days later, and there’s a confidence in knowing your hands always look freshly polished.

After just three months of wearing gel polish myself, I understood exactly why so many people become loyal to it.

But when I finally removed mine, my natural nails felt thinner, softer and noticeably weaker.

Gel polish forms a hardened layer over your natural nail, cured under UV or LED light, which is why it lasts so much longer than traditional polish.

But repeated use, especially without breaks, can weaken the nail over time.

Concern around ingredients has also come into focus globally, with Europe banning trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a chemical used to harden gel polish, due to safety concerns.

While gel manicures are not inherently harmful, long-term use without proper care can leave your natural nails compromised.

Signs of damage

If your nails don’t feel the same after removing gel polish, there are clear warning signs to look for:

  • Peeling or flaking
  • Thinner than usual nails
  • Splitting or breakage
  • A rough or uneven surface
  • White patches or discolouration
  • Nails that bend easily
  • Dry, dehydrated cuticles

This often happens because of repeated acetone exposure, surface buffing and improper removal, particularly when gel polish is peeled off instead of properly soaked and removed.

How to restore your nails

If your nails are already weakened, focus on supporting healthy regrowth:

  • Start by taking a complete break from gel polish. This gives your nails the chance to grow without additional stress.
  • Use cuticle oil daily. Consistent hydration improves the condition of both the nail and the surrounding tissue, creating a healthier environment for growth.
  • Keep your nails shorter while they recover. Longer nails are more prone to breaking when weakened.
  • Protect your hands when cleaning or washing dishes. Excessive water exposure softens the nail further, increasing the risk of splitting.
  • Most importantly, be patient. Nails grow slowly, and recovery happens gradually as new nail replaces the damaged portion.

Prevention matters

Protecting your natural nails starts with changing small habits:

  • Never peel off gel polish (no matter how tempting it is), as this removes layers of your natural nail.
  • Take regular breaks between gel manicures to allow nails to recover. Even a few weeks between applications allows the nail to regain strength.
  • Apply cuticle oil daily to restore moisture and flexibility* Avoid excessive buffing, which thins the nail plate.
  • Use gentle removal methods. Choose nail technicians who prioritise nail health over speed.
  • Wear gloves when cleaning to prevent dehydration.

These simple steps can significantly reduce long-term damage.

Taking the time to restore your nails isn’t about giving up gel polish forever; it’s about making sure your nails remain healthy enough to carry that glossy finish long term.
